The friendly start is what leaves Italian half-finished
Italian gives back quickly. The pronunciation is transparent, the vocabulary overlaps with English through Latin, and a modest amount of grammar already carries a holiday. That generosity is real, and it also removes the pressure that would otherwise force you past the point where you are merely intelligible.
Past that point the specifics show up. Articulated prepositions — «nel», «del», «sul», «dalla» — which fuse the preposition and the article into one word that English speakers routinely skip. Gender, which has to be right across the article, the noun and the adjective. The essere-or-avere choice in the passato prossimo, decided while speaking.
And the double consonants, which are not decoration: they separate whole words. Reading about them changes nothing. Being stopped the moment you get one wrong, and saying the word again correctly, is what changes something.
What actually gets in the way, and where you drill it

- The articulated forms are the most persistent gap for English speakers in Italian, and they get their own exercise with a closed list.
- Articles and pronouns
- «il», «lo», «gli», and the particles «ci» and «ne», which have no clean English equivalent and are only learned by use.
- Verbs
- 300 verbs in the syllabus, with the passato prossimo auxiliary and the everyday irregulars asked out loud.
- Vocabulary
- 787 concepts asked in the Vocabulary exercise and reviewed afterwards in silent games — including the Latin-looking words that do not mean what an English speaker assumes.
What a session looks like

I can already get by in Italian. What does this add?

Does it correct pronunciation and double consonants?
