Learn French by speaking it from day one
English gave French about a third of its vocabulary, which makes reading it easy and speaking it deceptively hard. Agnetia drills only the second part.
Reading French is a gift. Speaking it is a separate skill
An English speaker gets an enormous head start in French vocabulary — centuries of borrowing mean thousands of words are already half known. It makes early reading feel effortless and it makes the first spoken conversation feel like a wall, because none of that shared vocabulary tells you how to build a French sentence in real time.
The things that actually block you are structural. The partitive article, which English has no equivalent for: you drink «du café», not «café». Grammatical gender, which has to be decided before the noun rather than after. The choice between «être» and «avoir» in the passé composé, made at conversational speed rather than at essay speed.
And the numbers deserve their own mention. «Soixante-dix», «quatre-vingts», «quatre-vingt-dix» are understood in five minutes and take a year to say without doing arithmetic — because understanding them was never the problem, and nobody repeats them out loud enough times.
What actually gets in the way, and where you drill it
- Numbers
- The Numbers exercise has seven levels and exists for exactly this. French seventies, eighties and nineties are automated by saying them fast, repeatedly — not by understanding the arithmetic.
- Articles and pronouns
- The partitive, the contractions with «de», and gender that no English rule predicts. One exercise, closed list, asked over and over.
- Prepositions
- «à», «de», «en», «chez». Few of them, constantly used, and English is a poor guide to which one goes where.
- Verbs
- 300 verbs in the syllabus. The passé composé auxiliary and the everyday irregulars are asked out loud, which is where they either exist or do not.
What a session looks like
There are no lessons and no syllabus to get through. You hold a button, you speak, and the agent answers in about two seconds — six to seven turns a minute.

All seven languages work as a native language and as a target language, so you pick the pair when you start. The native language can be changed later from your profile; the one you are learning cannot.

Frequently asked questions
I read French well but freeze when I speak. Is this for me?
That is the case it fits best. Agnetia does not explain what you already understand — it makes you produce it. Start with Conversation at whichever of the three levels feels comfortable.
Does it fix my French pronunciation?
No. Agnetia does not evaluate accent or articulation in any language. It corrects what you say, not how it sounds — French phonetics needs a different kind of help.
Is it French from France?
The syllabus is standard French. There is no Québécois or African francophone specific content.
Can I learn French with the site in another language?
Yes. The interface language and the language you are learning are chosen separately, and all seven work as either.
